The Sustainability Tour – Aviation Addresses Climate Crisis
Monday, August 14th - 12:00pm

As hubs to the global economy, airports have a key role to play in addressing the climate crisis by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with nations and states everywhere. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is doing this and more, as we aim to be the first airport in the world to achieve “triple zero”: zero waste going to landfill, zero net energy facilities, zero net carbon operations. In addition, SFO also leads climate initiatives in water stewardship and health and wellbeing.

Learning Objectives:

  • To share the benefits of aviation including jobs/professional growth, regional economic development, and industry/city sustainability

  • To acknowledge the environmental impacts of aviation, the built environment and ground transportation and the ways these are mitigated through industry best management practices

  • To identify and make tangible the specific ways SFO is leading sustainability and resilience across global airports

  • To connect guests’ tangible sustainability measures, inspire them to consider these for their own journeys/homes/businesses, develop a sense of pride when traveling through SFO for its investments in sustainability

Itinerary:

  • 12:15pm Leave Hyatt Regency via SFO Airport Shuttle. Travel time 15 min to get to International-A Departures Level Shuttle Stop at SFO

  • 12:30pm-1:45pm San Francisco Airport (SFO) tour (60 min tour including question time)

  • 1:45pm leave SFO

The Facility Tour – The Power of Three: Transfer, MRF, and AD
Wednesday August 16th - 1:50pm

*Waivers Required: Shoreway | Blue Line

1st stop: Shoreway Environmental Center

The award winning Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos is the hub for waste and recycling activities for the RethinkWaste service area (11 public agencies in southern San Mateo County). On this tour you will see the Transfer Station and the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). The Transfer Station houses the compost, garbage and construction and demolition materials collected from residents and businesses and self-haul. Inside is also an area for compost giveaway to service area residents and houses our Organics-to-Energy project first piloted in 2020 to process source separated organics to send to nearby wastewater treatment plants to be processed as energy. The MRF, rebuilt in 2010, was upgraded in 2020 with more optical sorters to increase throughput, container separation and glass cleaning.

2nd stop: Blue Line Biogenic CNG Facility

Guests will visit our dry anaerobic digestion facility where we transform organic waste into fuel and digestate (which undergoes further processing to become soil amendment). Tour will include looks at the receiving bay with in-bound material to be digested, 8 anaerobic digestion tunnels, the control room, 2 in-vessel composting tunnels with digested material being dried, and the infrastructure used for scrubbing, and compressing methane for use as fuel. In operation since late 2014, this award-winning facility is permitted to process 11,200 tons per year. Blue Line's sister company, South San Francisco Scavenger, uses the natural gas produced to power a carbon negative collection fleet and to help its franchise cities earn over 50% of SB 1383's procurement goal.

Two Paths to Deconstruction, Diversion and Design – PlaceMakers and Firewood Farms
Wednesday, August 16 - 1:50 pm

This tour will feature two organizations that are sustaining our reuse economy...

PlaceMakers, Inc

PlaceMakers primary business is high-end residential demo. They are the demo subcontractor to the general contractor. In general, they don’t demolish homes, they deconstruct and prep for major remodel(s). The big difference with PlaceMakers is that they #salvage everything that they can.  From chandeliers to crystal wall sconces, from a Sub-Zero fridge to a Bosch washing machine, from the old growth redwood wall paneling to the 2” oak floor, it all goes back to their lumberyard of vintage reclaimed wood and then to their showroom. They get a wide variety of materials from many eras. It's fun and exciting!

They are open to the public and offer a diverse array of architectural assets such as:

• Reclaimed lumber

• Plumbing and lighting fixtures

• Cabinets and vanities

• Railings and gates

• Windows and doors

• Fire surrounds and vintage tile

Firewood Farms

Doing what they love and loving what they do for over 48 years, at their essence, Firewood Farms’ mission is to divert logs, lumber and green waste from the landfill and create sustainable products. They have four distinct businesses; Manufacturers and Service : Firewood Producers / Suppliers, Chainsaw Carved Wood Sculptures, Live Edge Wood Slabs, Reclaimed / Salvaged lumber & timbers. Services they provide include de-construction of building and structures, portable sawmill, slab flattening and re-saw work, custom design, and delivery. Firewood Farms is a true ‘Green’ business and pride themselves on offering clients the highest quality products with the lowest transport and manufacture-related emissions. Typically, material is sourced within a 100-mile radius of their facility. Their Chainsaw Sculptures are some of the best to be found – sculptors have a combined experience of over 120 yrs in the industry and create sculptures of all shapes and sizes. One of the largest completed pieces weighed over 45 tons and stood over 37 ft tall!

Their Reclaimed and Salvaged wood products, used for both commercial and residential work, include:

  • Flooring and trim

  • Siding

  • Countertops and paneling
