WEDNESDAY SEPT 6th HIGHLIGHTS
Our morning started with a brief presentation by Mindy McIntyre. Mindy McIntyre was appointed CalRecycle’s Chief Deputy Director by Governor Gavin Newsom in February 2022. Prior to her appointment, she served as a Deputy Cabinet Secretary in the Office of the Governor since 2021. Ms. McIntyre was Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs at CalRecycle from 2016 to 2021, Legislative Consultant in the Office of Senator Lois Wolk from 2009 to 2016 and Water Program Manager at the Planning and Conservation League from 2003 to 2009.
Our keynote speaker for Day 1 was Chad Hymas, who is an inspirational speaker and builds on lessons learned to help us become better leaders. Chad states a motivating presentation must be accompanied by solutions that change and inspire lives. Today more than ever, people are looking not simply for entertainment, but for direction and solid answers. Chad Hymas has spent the last three years developing solutions that transformed his life. Day 2 (Thursday) Highlights:
On Thursday, September 8, we had Mayor Esther Sanchez welcome the CRRA to the City of Oceanside. Mayor Esther Sanchez was first elected to the Oceanside City Council on November 7, 2000, her initial run for local office. She was elected Councilmember in District 1 in November 2018, the City's first District Election. She was elected Mayor in November 2020. Mayor Sanchez was born and raised in Oceanside, part of a four-generation Oceanside family.
Heidi Sanborn was a part of our keynote, to discuss what is happening at the California Statewide Commission on Recycling Markets and Curbside Recycling. Ms. Sanborn is the Founder of the National Stewardship Action Council and has served as its Executive Director since 2015. She is also the founding Director of the California Product Stewardship Council where she has served for 12 years. These nonprofits are dedicated to reducing waste, increasing recycling and advocating for a circular economy. She was appointed by State Treasurer Fiona Ma to the Green Bond Market Development Committee in 2019 tasked with efficiently raising billions of dollars in new and affordable capital to build climate-friendly infrastructure. She also was appointed by CalEPA to serve on the Statewide Commission on Recycling Markets and Curbside Recycling in June of 2020 and was elected Chair. The voluntary Commission submitted 34 policy recommendations to the California Legislature, with full consensus votes in its first 18 months, resulting in numerous bills passing in 2021 that were groundbreaking for the field.
To complete our keynote presentations, Evan Edgar (Edgar & Associates) moderated a panel on Green House Gas and Energy, what does California have in store for us? Evan is the master of pulling an engaging panel of speakers together, and integrating conversation and questions from the audience. This will include panelists, Frank Ferral (President & CEO of the Hayward Chamber), Julia Levin (Bio Energy Association of California), and Eugene Tseng (E. Tseng & Associates).
Evan Edgar is the Principal Engineer and President of Edgar & Associates, Inc. since 1997. Mr. Edgar has over thirty years of experience in all aspects of solid waste management as a registered civil engineer who has advocated on for green energy incentives, compost market development, greenhouse gas reductions policies, and practical regulations in front of legislative committees, regulatory agencies, and local commissions involving the collection, hauling, processing, and composting of urban green and yard wastes. Mr. Edgar has advised private industry companies, state and local governments, and non-governmental organizations on recycling and organic waste project development issues including technical feasibility, technology deployment, collection options, land use compatibility, site design, operations, grant and loan funding, business development, and market development issues.
Day 3 (Friday) Highlights
Tim Flanagan is the new International President of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). Mr. Flanagan currently works for SCS Engineers but previously was the General Manager of the Monterey Regional Waste Management District, where he managed a team of more than 150 professional, technical, and operations personnel for over 15 years. Prior to joining the District, Mr. Flanagan worked for Waste Management Inc. (WM) for almost 20 years, managing several operations engaged in collections, transfer, and recycling processing.
JESSICA WAITE majored in psychology and biology at California State University San Marcos and planned to study medicine. After interning for several years at a local hospital she became alarmed at the current state of healthcare and became determined to be part of the solution in a preventative way. In 2012 Jessica paired up with Davin Waite, a creative chef with a love for cooking with veggies. The two co-founded the restaurants Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub and The Whet Noodle. Both restaurants feature many vegan menu items and focus on sourcing locally and minimizing waste through total utilization. In 2017, while attending the California Resource Recovery Association in San Diego, Jessica wrote the first business plan for a restaurant with a zero waste ethos and a fully plant based menu. Two and a half years later the first location of The Plot was opened in South Oceanside.
