San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy (SELC) is a public-spirited, non-profit organization formed in 1987 with the mission to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and its watershed. Located in North County San Diego, the conservancy is governed by a volunteer board of directors which sets policy for SELC’s executive director and staff. The conservancy raises funds through membership dues, solicitation of private and corporate donations as well as public and private grants. Funds are used to support education programs and projects that directly benefit the health of the lagoon and its watershed or upgrade services available to visitors.
Responsibilites:
The primary goals of the Community Outreach Coordinator (OC) are to help oversee and build upon San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy’s efforts to engage and connect with its membership and the local community at large. Activities will encompass public relations, marketing, media contact, website and newsletter publication, resource supervision and community events. Specific responsibilities of the OC include, but are not limited to:
- Marketing and Public Relations
- Serve as a communications contact for SELC
- Collaborate with staff and board to develop and implement a public relations and marketing strategy for the conservancy to include: media plan & schedules; event promotion; branding strategy; touch campaigns to engage and activate existing membership; action plans for developing/increasing community awareness and expanding education markets; identifying additional markets for SELC penetration, etc.
- Copy writing for news advisories, press releases, editorials, other articles for distribution through multiple media formats, website and other pieces as required
- Newsletters: publish & distribute quarterly newsletter; draft and compile news and event announcements into monthly electronic newsletters
- Oversee production of visually stimulating materials for effective message communication and marketing in print advertising, online, posters, mailings and brochures
- Website: oversee timely information updates and flow with contracted vendor
- Archival: solicit and maintain database of photographs for use in conservancy publications; maintain media clippings notebook and electronic file
- Volunteer Activities
- Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for monthly restoration projects and information booth staffing
- Events
- Collaborate with staff and committees to promote, help plan and support all SELC events
- Coordinate and staff information booth at street fairs and community events
- Keep the “events box” stocked with literature.
- Administration & Reporting
- Track and evaluate the success and impact of the outreach-related volunteer program
- Attend bi-monthly staff meetings and other meetings on an as-needed basis
- Submit monthly staff report
- Other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Bachelor’s Degree or minimum four years of related experience/training and/or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Preferred degree/experience credentials include: marketing, communications, event planning and coordination, public relations, journalism, environmental studies, natural resources, or environmental education, public policy, community planning, or related field.
- Strong knowledge and abilities relating to commonly used clerical/administrative support and project coordination concepts, practices, and procedures
- Clear, effective and demonstrable oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, problem solving, proofreading, customer service and relationship building abilities
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple, high priority projects with a keen attention to detail required
- Professional demeanor; team player orientation; ability to interface with internal and external parties at all levels
- Hands on, energetic and motivated self-starter
- Proficiency in the following software or systems: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Reader; Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator a plus
Hours:
Flexibility is key This is intended to be a part-time position (approximately 25 hours per week). Must work some evenings and weekends, as needed, to attend SELC functions, community events, etc.
Compensation:
The position of Community Outreach Coordinator is a non-exempt position. SELC offers a competitive compensation package including $17.00 - $25.00/hour depending on qualifications, plus vacation pay, holiday pay, and participation in a 403b retirement plan with an employer match.
