Pro Peninsula is a San Diego based nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening individual and community efforts to protect the natural environment throughout the Baja California Peninsula. Pro Peninsula envisions the creation of a network of strong and effective environmental organizations backed by an educated and active public working towards the common goal of environmental preservation.

About the Position
In October of 2007, Pro Peninsula held a strategic planning session to address the group's continuing growth and evolution. In this session the Pro Peninsula board and core staff members refined the organization's structure, developed a work plan to follow over the next three years, and discussed plans for proactively addressing future communications and outreach needs. One outcome was the creation of a Membership and Communications Manager position, whose primary functions are to increase visibility and awareness of the organization, develop and implement a communications and marketing plan, cultivate member and donor relations, and coordinate fundraising/outreach events.

Position Description
The Membership and Communications Manager is responsible for administration and management of the outreach and membership efforts of the organization. The position reports directly to the Executive Director, and receives support from a part-time Administrative Assistant. This position will work closely with the Pro Peninsula Executive Director, the Board of Directors and staff. This is a full-time position. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Marketing & Communications:
Develops and maintains marketing, public relations and communications plan to methodically disseminate timely, relevant information to/about key stakeholders.

  • Develops/executes marketing plan
  • Responsible for increasing visibility/awareness of Pro Peninsula's mission through the production of clear marketing communications collateral; direct mail, brochures, newsletter, annual report, membership benefits etc.
  • Implements/manages strategic internet marketing plan through e-newsletter and web site (format, articles, deadline management)
  • Serves as liaison /spokesperson between Pro Peninsula and media; to include media plan, connection with editorial staff and reporters
  • Responsible for marketing of sponsorship opportunities and membership; identifying individual and corporate fundraising opportunities
  • Manages and promotes brand reputation, clarity & consistency
  • Develops marketing and communications budget and controls costs in line with approved budgets
  • Prepares activity reports for Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders as needed

Member and Donor Relations:
Maintains/builds consistent contact with existing/new members and donors ensuring understanding of services and benefits; cultivates new members and donors; identifies opportunities to engage members and donors; maintains proprietary relational database on members and donors

  • Develops/executes member relations plan; membership recruitment and renewal campaigns
  • Update/manage database with current members and donors and populate with target market
  • Builds relationship with members, donors, staff and community; represents Pro Peninsula at community events and member related activities; makes presentations
  • Coordinates fundraising events and campaigns
  • Develops strategic plan with Director to meet/exceed membership and fundraising goals
  • Oversees regular communications to members and donors including newsletter, invitations to events and activities, and solicitations
  • Ensures that member and donor inquiries and problems are responded to promptly

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in marketing, business administration, sales, communications or related field

Experience:

  • Minimum two years experience with event coordination, marketing, community outreach, fundraising campaigns, or other related fields
  • Nonprofit experience desired

Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft office and related publishing software, Internet and E-mail
  • Strong presentation/communication skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Spanish communication skills
  • Strong networking skills, thrives on relationships

Abilities:

  • Execution and deadline oriented; able to multi-task
  • Detail oriented with the ability to learn quickly and work independently
  • High energy, enthusiastic
  • Willingness, ability to travel (10% or less)
  • Must be self-starting, flexible, and an independent worker
  • Passion and/or interest in mission of Pro Peninsula

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary commensurate with experience

  • Personal Time Off: Pro Peninsula is committed to providing earnings protection for vacation, illness, medical and dental appointments, personal business, personal holidays, funerals or other leave of absences. The nature of work at times requires employees to maintain erratic schedules which make it difficult to discern between personal-time and work-time. As such, Pro Peninsula makes no formal accounting of PTO. It is each employee's responsibility to manage their responsibilities within their respective work plan and schedule.
